Passing of CSTB’s founding chair, Joseph F. Traub, at age 83

 

Joseph F. Traub, founding chair of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, died on August 24, 2015, in Sante Fe, NM. Traub was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1985 for initiating optimal iteration theory, for creating significant new algorithms that solve diverse problems, and for educational leadership in computing. He was CSTB chair from 1986 to 1992 and again from 2005 to 2009. At the time of his passing, he was Edwin Howard Armstrong Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, where he founded the department in 1979, and an external professor of the Santa Fe Institute.
