Embedded, Everywhere: A Research Agenda for Networked Systems of Embedded Computers This report explores the potential of networked systems of embedded computers and the research challenges arising from embedding computation and communications technology into a multitude of arenas. It describes the many ways in which these emerging networks operate under unique constraints not present in more traditional distributed systems such as the Internet. A comprehensive, systems-oriented research agenda is presented along with recommendations to major federal funding agencies.

Project Scope This project will examine technical opportunities and trends in networked embedded computing -- the interconnection of microprocessors within dedicated devices for control or communications purposes. It will identify emergent opportunities and applications and plot key research directions to be pursued. In doing so, the study will develop a working definition of embedded computing, examine the range of applications in which networked embedded computers may be used; identify enabling technologies, and develop a research agenda for pursuing work in this field. The project is expected to help guide the development of federal programs in networked embedded computing and to help the research community sort through the range of technical challenges it faces.
