Introduction to Papers
A series of papers was commissioned by the Committee on the Science of Changing Behavioral Health Social Norms in order to synthesize the evidence base on social norms, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. As much as possible, authors were asked to synthesize existing meta-analyses and reviews of the literature.
The papers can be downloaded by clicking on the titles below. The first three papers focus on measurement of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of people toward mental health and mental illness, substance use and disorders, and physical health and illness. The next four papers focus on the context and factors that influence attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. The final paper summarizes what is known on the effectiveness of interventions to improve attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.
