These papers were commissioned for a planning meeting on assessing informal and afterschool science learning . The workshop was convened by the Board on Science Education on June 11-12, 2011 in Irvine, California with support from the Noyce Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, and the Samueli Foundation. Opinions and statements included in the paper are solely those of the individual author, and are not necessarily adopted or endorsed or verified as accurate by the Board on Science Education or the National Academy of Sciences, including the National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, or National Research Council.
