Workshop on Service-Learning in Undergraduate Geosciences
Workshop Project Information
Geosciences: we use this term broadly to include all aspects of the earth system (atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, solid earth, geography, environmental, etc.) as well as those disciplines focused on the intersection of humans and the Earth (geography, environmental science and studies, sustainability studies, etc.).
Service-Learning: activities that engage students in addressing real community problems in ways that are connected to course learning goals.
Service-Learning has been cited as a high impact practice in the education of undergraduates. There are many examples of undergraduate courses and programs that incorporate service-learning or civic engagement, although not all are explicitly labeled in this way or connected to others doing similar work. The upcoming workshop will be a time to share examples and learn from each other about using service to help undergraduates learn the skills, echniques, approaches, and ways of thinking of the geosciences.
