ABOUTThe prevalence and severity of disasters, from wildfires to hurricanes, puts enormous strains on residents of areas affected by disasters as well as all levels of government responding to the disasters. There are great needs for timely data to help prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Furthermore, there are a diverse array of data sources that could be useful for disaster preparation, response, recovery, and impacts, but there can be significant challenges in accessing and integrating these different data sources when and where they are needed. This seminar will explore some data sources and tools and creative approaches to using and integrating data for this purpose. Specifically, the seminar will feature presentations by federal statistical agencies illustrating different resources and tools that they provide to make their data accessible and usable for disasters. The seminar will also feature presentations from users who draw upon federal data and integrate it with other data sources for disaster planning, response, recovery, or study the consequences of disasters. The discussion will address the challenges and opportunities to improve data accessibility and integration in this important area.
