Bruce Braun is Director of the Board on Army Science and Technology (BAST) within the Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences (DEPS) of the National Academies.
Before becoming Director of the BAST in 1991, he served 27 years as an Infantry officer retiring with the rank of Colonel. His Army service provided broad experience in research, technology, weapons and program development at the High Technology Test Bed; acquisition and budget formulation with the Army Program Analysis and Evaluation Directorate; human factors in system design and simulation as Deputy Director MANPRINT; training and personnel policy formulation as developer of the Army Career and Alumni Program; and as the Executive Director of the Army Science Board for the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition.
His military experience included a variety of command and staff assignments throughout the United States and the world. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry, 8th Infantry Division in Germany and Delta Company in the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry, 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Staff assignments were served in the 2nd Armored Division, Fort Hood TX; 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis WA; 1st Army HQ, Fort Meade MD; training staff at Fort Leavenworth, KS; the Pentagon; and 8th Army and UNC in Korea. School assignments included the Naval War College, Command and General Staff College, and the Basic and Advanced Officers’ Courses.
Bruce’s numerous awards and decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star for valor, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Airborne Wings, and the Ranger Tab. In 1994, he was inducted into the Purdue University ROTC Hall of Fame.
A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Bruce earned a B.S. Degree from Purdue University where, as a distinguished military graduate, he was commissioned in the Regular Army. His academic credentials also include an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, an M.S. in Business Management from Salve Regina University, and an M.S. in Business Administration from Southwest Missouri State University.
