Dr.  William B. Gail appointed Steering Committee Co-Chair

We are pleased to announce that Dr. William (Bill) Gail will join Dr. Waleed Abdalati as co-chair of the ESAS 2017 decadal survey. Dr. Gail, currently a member of the decadal survey steering committee, is replacing Dr. Antonio Busalacchi, Jr. who resigned in early May following the announcement of his appointment as the President of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

Request for Community Town Halls

The decadal survey steering committee encourages interested members of the community to consider organizing a town hall meeting at their institution that would provide a local forum for colleagues to discuss and consider any aspect of the survey. Organizers should feel free to focus town hall meetings on any aspects of the survey they think are important, such as key science opportunities in the decade ahead, how Earth system science can continue to provide knowledge important to key societal challenges, and the role of technology development and other forms of innovation in the execution of our science.

June Meeting Recap

The steering committee and members of the five ad hoc study panels met June 2-5, 2016 in Irvine, CA. The meeting included closed session discussions among the various decadal survey participants on the scope of their task and the timeline moving forward. Panels also spent considerable time reading, sorting, and discussing the many thoughtful white papers that have been submitted by the community. A short open session on June 3 featured discussions with study sponsors from NASA and NOAA. The panels will meet individually in August and September and may reconvene early next year for a final “Jamboree” including all panel members.
