2013 AAAS Symposium - "U.S. Climate and Weather Extremes: Past, Present, and Future"
Sponsored by the four USNCs for the Earth Sciences and spearheaded by the U.S. National Committee for the International Union for Quaternary Research. This session provided both current and paleoclimatic perspectives on the nature of recent extreme climate and weather events and their societal and ecological impacts, with a focus on the United States. Teaching Climate Change using Large Lakes
The 2012 teaching climate workshop was held June 19-20 in conjunction with the AMQUA Biennial Meeting. Co-sponsored by the USNC/INQUA, this workshop introduced participants to an array of data that was gathered from large lakes and used to study past climates and predict future climate changes. The workshop provided hands-on opportunities to examine cores and historic images and use public-domain databases to develop classroom teaching exercises. It also included an optional field trip that combined a tour of working core and research labs with a cruise on Lake Superior on the research vessel Blue Heron. Mentoring Event for Early Career Scientists at the American Quaternary Association Meeting in Duluth, Minnesota on Saturday, June 23
The USNC/INQUA organized a lunch hour mentoring event on Saturday, June 23rd, 1:00-2:00 pm during the AMQUA meeting in Duluth, MN (http://www.cce.umn.edu/American-Quaternary-Association-Meeting/). The event was open to students and early-career scientists, and began with a panel of senior scientists describing research opportunities and ways for the participants to get their careers started. The participants then broke into groups according to their area of interest for roundtable discussions led by members of the USNC/INQUA and other senior scientists. This allowed the early career scientists to network with others with similar interests. Rolfe Mandel (USNC Chair), Art Bettis (USNC member and incoming AMQUA President), and Ester Sztein (The National Academies) organized this event.

Teaching Climate Change from the Geologic Record
The 2010 Teaching Climate Change workshop was held August 10-11, before the American Quaternary Association (AMQUA) meeting, in Laramie, Wyoming. The workshop was attended by graduate students and professors at the college and university levels and museum education and outreach staff. The 27 participants were very engaged throughout the workshop and enjoyed the highly informative and interactive scientific presentations given by David Meltzer, Eric Grimm, John (Jack) Williams, Russell Graham, and Rolfe Mandel. Karin Kirk, from On the Cutting Edge, spoke about the pedagogical aspects of teaching climate change.
 
The optional field trip held on August 12 included travel through the Snowy Range Scenic By-Way and over the Medicine Bow Mountains west of Laramie, WY. The field trip group, which included both teaching workshop participants and scientists attending the American Quaternary Association biennial meeting, provided an opportunity for scientists and instructors to interact and learn about the geology and natural history of the area.
