  The October 3 and 4, 2011, event will mark the organization's 10th anniversary. 
  
  
• U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO addresses CHR
  Ambassador David Killion praised the work of the CHR with UNESCO, particularly the committee's submissions on unjustly imprisoned scientists to UNESCO's Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, at a CHR working dinner on May 3, 2011.
  
  
• Cooperation by International Scientific Community Needed in Japan
  In response to a letter of condolence from the H.R. Network, the Science Council of Japan shared its plan to participate in rebuilding Japan and its hope that the international scientific community will help.
  
  
• Indian Pediatrician Binayak Sen Released on Bail; Appeal Process Ongoing
  On April 18, 2011, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to Dr. Sen, who is appealing a life sentence handed down in late December 2010, and said there was no evidence to support his conviction.
  
   
• UNESCO's Governing Board Indefinitely Suspends Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Life Sciences Research Prize
  In May 2010 the H.R. Network's Executive Committee joined an international campaign to urge UNESCO to abolish the Obiang prize.

• During the 2009 NAS Annual Meeting, Engineer and Architect Suleiman Nuh Ali Recalls his Eight Years in Solitary Confinement in Somalia
  Suleiman Nuh Ali told NAS members about his experience as a prisoner of conscience in Somalia from 1982 to 1989 and the CHR's efforts to gain his release, including a mission of inquiry to Mogadishu.  Click on the above link to hear his story.

• Longtime Libyan Prisoner of Conscience Fathi el-Jahmi Dies from Medical Neglect 
  On May 21, 2009, early in the morning, Libyan civil engineer Fathi el-Jahmi died at the Arab Medical Center in Amman, Jordan.

• H.R. Network's 9th Biennial Meeting--Rabat, Morocco
  The 9th biennial meeting of the H.R. Network was held on May 21-23, 2009, and was hosted by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco.  Members of academies and scholarly societies from 37 countries participated.

• Iraqi Women Scientists Twinning Program
  Because the majority of Iraqi women scientists, engineers, and health professionals are now cut off from their institutions, colleagues, libraries, and laboratories, women members of the U.S. National Academies are building an international network to provide professional and moral support to these colleagues.

  Urging prompt redress of the situation faced by prisoners at Guantanamo Bay naval facility in Cuba, the CHR reiterated its standing request to the U.S. government for information on selected detainees.
