About the Workshop

Under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Science, Technology, and Law and Board on Life Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, an interdisciplinary ad hoc committee hosted a public workshop that brought together the scientific, medical, legal, and policy communities along with members of the public to explore the opportunities and challenges posed by direct-to-consumer genetic testing. The workshop featured invited presentations and discussions on the many technical, legal, policy, and ethical questions that such testing raises, including (1) Overview of the Current State of Knowledge and the Future Research Trajectory; (2) Shared Genes and Emerging Issues in Privacy; (3) The Regulatory Framework; and (4) Education of the Public and the Medical Community. An individually-authored workshop summary was issued on December 22, 2010.

The workshop, Direct to Consumer Genetic Testing: A Cross-Academies Workshop, took place at the National Academies’ Keck Center, Room 100, 500 5th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20001 on August 31-September 1, 2009.
