Comments on A Strategic Plan for U.S. Burning Plasma Research 1. Fusion power needs to be developed because a) fossil fuels will be greatly exhausted by 2050. Solar and wind power can supply only 2% of our needs., and nuclear power has its well known problems (explosions, proliferation, and uranium depletion). 2. Magnetic fusion is the only reasonable energy source. Laser fusion is pulsed and gives maintenance problems unacceptable by industry. 3. The U.S. has lost its lead in this field due to budget cuts. It is unacceptable for the U.S. to be a world follower. 4. ITER is making good progress toward a burning plasma. The U.S. is only a minor partner in ITER compared with Europe. This is embarrassing. 5. It is not too late for the U.S. to be a major partner in DEMO, perhaps even hosting it here. Further details can be found in: F.F. Chen, An Indispensable Truth F.F.
