GETTING STARTED

The NRC Research Associateship Programs offer a variety of opportunities for postdoctoral and senior research fellowships in federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. The steps listed below will guide you through the process of finding and applying for postdoctoral and senior research fellowships. Information on the NETL Methane Hydrates Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowship Program and the USMA/ARL Davies Teaching Fellows Program can be found on our Special Programs page. For a general overview of the application and review process, please view the RAP Application Flowchart

Step One: Determine if you are eligible to apply for an NRC Research Associateship:

   Review General Eligibility Criteria

Step Two: Identify sponsor Federal Laboratories to which you wish to apply and Research Opportunities you wish to pursue. To do so, search the following pages for an opportunity that is right for you:

   Search for Research Opportunities

Explore Programs at Participating Federal Laboratories

Step Three: Contact the proposed Research Adviser(s) listed with the Research Opportunity(s) of interest about a potential collaboration and funding availability.

Step Four: Read Navigating the Online Application and Apply! (Each applicant may apply to up to three different Participating Agencies in each review, but to only one research opportunity at each Participating Agency.)

Program Exceptions

While the basic processes for application are similar across all sponsors, some agencies have exceptions which prospective applicants should note.

Eligibility – Some programs have citizenship restrictions.  Please check the eligibility criteria of the agency to which you are applying in the Eligibility Chart or in the Participating Laboratories section.

Level – Not all sponsors support senior research awards.  Please check the specific details for the agency to which you are applying in the Eligibility Chart or in the Participating Laboratories section.

Review Cycles – While the NRC Research Associateship Programs hold four competitions each year, some sponsors limit applications to certain reviews:

Special Lab Review Deadlines
NETL/MHF participates ONLY in the February and August Review
NIST participates ONLY in the February and August Reviews
NRL participates ONLY in the February, May and August Reviews
