U.S. Liaison Committee for IUPAP

The National Academy of Sciences is the U.S. adhering body of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and it maintains its relationship with the union through the U.S. Liaison Committee (USLC)/IUPAP. IUPAP’s mission is to assist in the worldwide development of physics, foster international cooperation in physics, and help in the application of physics toward solving problems of concern to humanity. 
 

WHAT'S NEW

IUPAP General Assembly, November 5-7, 2014 in Singapore
The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) is governed by its General Assembly, which meets every three years. The 28th General Assembly of IUPAP was held November 5-7, 2014 at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. For more details on the General Assembly’s program and public lectures, please consult the Nanyang Technological University’s website. General Assembly highlights included:

Kennedy Reed: IUPAP President-Elect
The USLC/IUPAP would like to congratulate its ex-officio member, Kennedy Reed, on his appointment as president-elect of IUPAP. He will serve a three-year term as president-elect, followed by a three-year term as the president of IUPAP and a three-year term as past-president. President-Elect Reed has served on the IUPAP Commission on Physics for Development for nine years and was the chair of that commission for three years. More information on his election can be found on the website of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In addition, the following U.S. nominees for IUPAP Commissions were appointed:

  • C3: Beate Schmittmann (Viriginia Tech) as Member
  • C4: Eun-Suk Seo (University of Maryland) as Member
  • C5: William Halperin (Northwestern University) as Secretary

  • C10: Laura Greene (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) as Vice-Chair
  • C11: Heidi Schellman (Northwestern University) as Vice-Chair
  • C12: Ani Aprahamian (University of Notre Dame) as Member
  • C13: Sekazi Mtingwa (MIT) as Member
  • C14: Priscilla Laws (Dickinson College) as Member

At the General Assembly, two resolutions that were presented by the USLC/IUPAP were passed. These were resolutions were:
  • To form a new IUPAP Commission on Accelerator Science
  • To create an IUPAP Working Group on the Newtonian Constant of Gravitation G

New ASESMA Dates and Location: January 19–30, 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa
The USLC/IUPAP would like to highlight the upcoming African School on Electronic Structure Methods and Applications (ASESMA). This ASESMA has been rescheduled and moved to a new location. The school will now take place at the University of Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa from January 19-30, 2015. It will be the third school in an IUPAP-endorsed series that is planned biennially from 2010 to 2020.

The schools emphasize the theory and computational methods for predicting and understanding properties of materials through calculations at the fundamental level of electronic structure, with a focus on the issues in materials science most relevant to Africa. The USLC/IUPAP’s support for ASESMA is provided by private funds. For more information, please consult the International Centre for Theoretical Physics.


International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015)
IYL 2015 is a global initiative which will highlight to the citizens of the world the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures, and for the development of society. The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies will consist of coordinated activities in science, education and development. These will ensure that people of all ages and all backgrounds from all countries appreciate the central role of light as the key cross-cutting scientific discipline of the 21st century. More information can be found on the website of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).
