Olga Shemyakina
Georgia Institute of Technology

Dr. Olga Shemyakina is an Associate Professor at the School of Economics at Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her Diploma from the Kazakh State Academy of Management in Almaty, Kazakhstan; MA in Economics from the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research in Almaty, Kazakhstan; MA in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and her Ph.D. MA in Economics from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. Her research examines the effects of violent conflict and subsequent instances of protracted economic and political instability on the behavior of households in various geographical and institutional settings using large-scale datasets. Dr. Shemyakina has also examined the effects of land reform on population, and the relationship between armed conflict and food security. Her particular focus has been on exploring gender-differentiated impact of armed conflicts. Dr. Shemyakina's regional research expertise lies in the context of Central Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. She worked on several consulting projects for the World Bank, studying links between armed conflict, education, and gender. Dr. Shemyakina also has research affiliations with the Households in Conflict Network, the Institute for the Study of Labor, and the Georgia Institute of Technology Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems.
