How can we apply the capabilities evident in Digital Tutors more widely and routinely to advance the education and training of the nation’s skilled technical workforce? Research on computer-based digital tutoring-- applying principles from cognitive and instructional theories-- has long been supported by the Department of Defense and other government agencies and research organizations. Recent assessments by DARPA have found digital tutoring to be particularly successful in education and training for technical knowledge and skills. There is evidence that digital tutoring has given Navy recruits knowledge and skills beyond those of experienced Fleet sailors and is an effective tool to ready veterans for civilian positions as experienced technicians.

On October 26, a half-day workshop,
"The Role of Digital Tutors", will describe the evidence on the efficacy of Digital Tutors, exploring our current knowledge about the capabilities and applicability of this technology for use in day-to-day teaching and learning at all levels. It will also discuss strategies and policies that might be used to implement digital tutoring more widely and to assess its impact at much larger scales.

This workshop follows up on the new report by the National Academies on
Building America’s Skilled Technical Workforce, which examines the coverage, effectiveness, flexibility, and coordination of the policies and various programs that prepare Americans for skilled technical jobs. Its findings and action-oriented recommendations set out an agenda for improving our nation’s system of technical education, training, and certification. The report highlights the emerging role of new information technologies in supplementing traditional education and training, shortening learning times, and increasing the expertise acquired, thereby improving the performance outcomes of learners, education and training organizations, and all who benefit from improvements in workforce technical skills.
