Dr. Samuel Kaplan is currently Professor & Chair of the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston-Medical School, Houston, Texas. He received his B.S. from Cornell University in 1959, in Biochemistry, an M.S. from Yale University in Microbiology in 1961, and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of California, San Diego in 1963. He did postdoctoral work at the MRC Laboratory in Cambridge England from 1964-1967. He has held positions at Western Reserve University, and the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana from 1968-1989, when he took his current position. He has over 225 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. He has served as a reviewer, Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bacteriology published by the American society for Microbiology, and Chair of the Publications Board for all 11 ASM journals. He served on the steering committee for PubMed Central, and has been elected as an AAAS Fellow.
