For the past eight years, she has co-managed a program in Biodiversity and BioDiscovery jointly sponsored by five agencies of the US government. The program supports consortia of US institutions working with institutions in low and middle income countries to discover new sources of drugs, bioenergy, and agrochemicals from nature. She also manages the Informatics Training for Global Health program and directs the Framework Programs for Global Health, which supports the development of multidisciplinary global health educational programs at universities in the US and developing countries. In 2009 she received the NIH Director’s award in recognition of her development and management of this program. Dr. Katz received her Ph.D. from M.I.T. in Cell and Molecular Biology and trained in Neurobiology at Columbia University and UCSF. As a faculty member at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and Texas A&M University, she directed a research laboratory in developmental genetics. She has also conducted research on wildlife conservation and biology in Malawi, Zambia, Israel, and Indonesia. She maintains a broad interest in biological issues, from cellular mechanisms to international cooperation in Conservation and Global Health.
