A Roundtable of Representatives from Federal Agencies and Professional Societies November 4, 2010 | Liaison Hotel - Capitol Hill, Washington, DC 20001 Highlight In November 2010 the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a roundtable that engaged representatives from federal agencies, academic institutions, and professional societies. This roundtable focused on programs that address the needs of postdoctoral and early career researchers and provided an opportunity for a discussion of this topic across a diverse variety of organizations and a full range of disciplines in science and engineering. Some recurring themes from the presentations include a) the impact that the lack of a cohort can have on individual researchers; b) the problem of the leaky pipeline; c) issues of re-entry into research careers; and d) the lack of support for postdoctoral researchers to explore alternative career options. The discussion unveiled some commonalities of the challenges across disciplines and institutions, called for promising practices and relevant data on an ongoing basis, and underscored the need for further exploration of how to successfully disseminate proven models and practices.
