The Impact of Social Networking and Crowdsourcing on Research, the Enterprise, and the Workforce

October 4-5, 2011

Social media have found application at all points of the research lifecycle.  While both powerful and exciting, the rapid adoption of a myriad set of online tools also poses questions for research and the enterprise more broadly.  With this meeting, GUIRR members examined the “yin and yang” of social networking.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this project is to develop national acceptance of general principles governing intellectual property negotiations between U.S. universities and industry, thereby allowing the once-healthy relationship between education/training and commercial/economic development to reestablish itself in the U.S.

APPROACH
In this project, GUIRR is the convener and facilitator for a joint effort between the Industrial Research Institute and the National Council of University Research Administrators to bring about systemic behavioral change in the approach of universities and industry to often-contentious intellectual property negotiations.
To date, three Congresses of about 30 invited delegates from university, industry, and government have developed a set of guiding principles for university-industry research partnerships, and are beginning to develop the toolkits to implement these principles. This project is currently in an outreach phase; queries from the public are welcomed (mmayo@nas.edu; 202-334-1706).
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND AND RESOURCES
SPONSORS
This project is supported by the Kauffman Foundation, with additional support from the Sloan Foundation and the Wallace Coulter Foundation, Boeing, Extrude-Hone (now Extrude-One), Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft.
