Charting a Return to ‘Way Out There’ Research and Risk-Taking at the Edges AGENDA
June 14, 2011 (dinner) June 15, 2011 (meeting) The Madison 20 F Street NW Conference Center Room: Montpelier Room Room: Conference Room A 1177 15th Street, N.W. 20 F Street, N.W. Washington, DC 20005 Washington, DC 20001 The topic of 'way out there' research is a big one that requires, in our view, some inspiration and re-education of funding agencies and policy makers to regenerate our belief in 'neck snapping' advances as contrasted with incremental contributions. With this meeting, GUIRR members will examine areas of high-risk and potentially high-impact/high-return research. Furthermore, the group will consider how to best pave the way for the creation of more disruptive, revolutionary technologies from our government agencies, government labs, universities, and companies, and where opportunities for cross-sector collaboration might exist. As with all GUIRR meetings, we will seek to identify ways in which the federal research agencies, research universities, and companies might better advance collaborative solutions to complex national problems – in this case, by considering ways in which America can regain its 'mojo' in innovation and discovery. 6:00-6:30 PM Cocktails 6:30-8:00 PM Dinner Moderator: Lydia Thomas, President and CEO (Ret.), Noblis; GUIRR Co-Chair The Department of "MAD SCIENTISTS" Regina Dugan, Director, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Location: 20 F Street NW Conference Center, Washington, DC 20001 – Conference Room A 7:30-8:00 AM Continental Breakfast 8:00-8:15 AM Welcome Remarks
