HBN Shoe, LLC
Brian Hughes was the founding seed investor of HBN Shoe, LLC, a company that engineers solutions for healthier feet with a fusion of medical science and bio-mechanics, and serves as Chairman and Director of R&D for the company.
Mr. Hughes has had a long career founding and leading companies. After spending five years insuring spacecraft early in his career, in 1984 he co-founded PTAT System Inc., which built the first private transatlantic fiber cable linking New York and London (sold to Sprint in 1989). He then returned to the aerospace industry, becoming CEO of the American Rocket Company until 1995. The hybrid rocket technology developed by American Rocket powered SpaceShipOne, winner of the X-Prize in 2004 and has been further developed for Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo. He was Employee #1 and is currently a board member of EXPLO, a notable summer enrichment program.
In 1996 he moved to San Antonio and focused on early stage companies ranging from consumer products to bio-informatics. He now focuses his time and energy on HBN Shoe, Explo.org, the San Antonio Water System’s CIAC and MIT.
Mr. Hughes is a life member of the MIT Corporation, its board of trustees. He serves on the Visiting Committees for the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (Past Chair), the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Nuclear Science and
Engineering (Past Chair) and Music and Theatre Arts. Mr. Hughes earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
