Staff Bios                                                                                                                                                                           

ANTHONY BOCCANFUSO (Executive Director, University Industry Demonstration Partnership) was selected to serve as the inaugural Executive Director for the University Industry Demonstration Partnership. He holds a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and earned his B.S. in Political Science and Chemistry from Furman University. Dr. Boccanfuso began his professional career as a Science Policy Fellow at the American Chemical Society where he worked within the society's government relations and science policy division. Before taking on this new position, Dr. Boccanfuso was Director for Research and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina and currently retains the position of Senior Director for Strategic Alliances within the College of Engineering and Computing. Dr. Boccanfuso has had a distinguished career in the research management and science policy arenas and has held a variety of positions at the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and PricewaterhouseCoopers as well as several universities. He currently serves on several boards including the National Hydrogen Association, South Carolina BIO and the Hydrogen Education Foundation for which he is the current chair.


ELIZABETH A. JUDSON is program manager for TurboNegotiator, a software tool that will assist industry with negotiating sponsored research agreements with universities. Prior to this, she was General Manager for Verco Materials, LLC, a Georgia Tech VentureLab company formed to commercialize technology to pressureless sinter boron carbide, a critical ceramic armor material. Beth has also worked on other Georgia Tech projects, including a manual on forming and operating Research Centers and organizing a site visit for a science and technology center proposal to the National Science Foundation on biologically enabled advanced materials and micro/nano-devices. For several years she was director of industry relations for Yamacraw, a Georgia economic development initiative in the form of a multi-university broadband chip design research center. Dr. Judson received a B.S. in ceramic science and a B.A. in mathematics magna cum laude from Alfred University in 1982, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in ceramic engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991 and 1999 respectively. Dr. Judson is a member of the Boards of Trustees for Alfred University and Southern Catholic College, as well as on the External Advisory Boards of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech and Clemson University.

SUSAN SAUER SLOAN (Director, Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable) joined The National Academies on May 27, 2008 as Director of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR). Before assuming the role, Ms. Sloan served a six-month appointment as Executive in Residence at the Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education (CASEE) of the National Academy of Engineering and, for the six years prior, as Chief Executive Officer of the Global Wireless Education Consortium (GWEC), a university-industry membership organization committed to the development and incorporation of current wireless technology curricula in academic institutions worldwide. Earlier in her career, Ms. Sloan worked as Corporate/Foundation Relations Consultant to the National Science Foundation’s Division of Undergraduate Education, as Associate Director of the Master of Health Science (MHS) in Health Policy program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, as Director of Communications for Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and as Senior Program Associate for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Sloan got her start in Washington, DC, working as a staff assistant to Representative Timothy E. Wirth (D-CO), U.S. House of Representatives.

DENISE DUANE is an Administrative Assistant in the College of Engineering at the University of South Carolina. Denise holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Communication from Ohio University. Prior to relocating to Columbia, South Carolina, Denise worked for the Rochester City School District in Rochester, NY for 15 years where she was a Project Specialist.








DENISE GREENE (Administrative Coordinator, Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable/University-Industry Demonstration Partnership) During her fifteen year tenure with The National Academies, Ms. Greene has worked with the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) in Travel Services and with the Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS). Prior to joining GUIRR, she was an Executive Assistant with the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) and was a Senior Program Assistant with the Ocean Studies Board in DELS. Ms. Greene attended the University of Maryland, College Park, and plans to complete her studies in Sociology.

 

 

 

LAURENA MOSTELLA (Administrative Assistant, Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable and University Industry Demonstration Partnership) provides programmatic and administrative support for both programs. Her background is in accounting and finance, having worked for private banks, a Las Vegas casino, as well as the Department of Defense, prior to joining GUIRR and UIDP. She majored in business, accounting, and computers.

 

 

 

 

MATT SPRINGATE is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. While at Furman, he majored in political science major and worked extensively with the Riley Institute at Furman, a non-profit research organization that studies issues critical to South Carolina and hosts visiting scholars at the university. Matt is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky. His career goals include relocating to Washington, DC and working on international trade policy. He currently lives in Lexington, KY.
