Kathy Young is the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Administration at the University Illinois’ Urbana campus. She has more than 17 years experience in research administration. Prior to joining the University, Kathy had a long career in financial operations and spent two years of the time as a bank examiner with a branch of the U.S. Treasury. Throughout her career at Illinois, she has played a role in strategic development of the research administrative function. She was responsible for tripling the size of the office staff within the last four years and for overseeing the implementation of a grants management system. She speaks frequently on research administration issues and team teaches a graduate level grantwriting class in the Chemistry Department.
Kathy received her Bachelor of Science degree in Career and Occupational Studies (concentration in Business Administration) from Eastern Illinois University, a Master’s in Education, and has completed the coursework for a Ph.D. in Education both from the University of Illinois – Urbana. The Master’s degree and Ph.D. coursework were in Higher Education Administration with a specialization in the Legal Basis of Analysis. Her academic interests have centered on research ethics.
