David M. Saravitz, Ph.D., focuses his intellectual property law practice on services relating to biotechnology/life science patents, including patent application drafting and prosecution, general patent counseling, strategic planning, patent licensing and opinions concerning patentability, freedom to operate and infringement.

 Dr. Saravitz has extensive research experience in the life sciences, including molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, physiology, agriculture, genetic engineering and the production and testing of transgenic organisms. Prior to joining Alston & Bird, he was employed as a research scientist for BASF Corporation, working in the areas of biotechnology and agricultural chemical development, and as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Genetics at North Carolina State University where he conducted structure/function studies of a water-channel protein and developed genetic engineering strategies for improving the disease resistance of crop plants. Dr. Saravitz is also a joint inventor of U.S. Patent No. 6,284,711, assigned to BASF Corporation.
 
While working as a full-time employee in Alston & Bird's Biotechnology Patents Group, Dr. Saravitz matriculated in the evening program at the North Carolina Central University School of Law, where he received his J.D. magna cum laude, and served as both chairperson and vice chairperson of the Intellectual Property Law Society. His educational background also includes a Ph.D. in botany/cell and molecular biology from Duke University, an M.S. in horticultural science from North Carolina State University and a B.S., with distinction, in Plant Science from The Pennsylvania State University. While attending Duke University, Dr. Saravitz was the recipient of both a National Institutes of Health Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant and a Plant Molecular Biology Fellowship from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
 
He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Saravitz is active in national and regional intellectual property law organizations including the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and the Triangle Intellectual Property Law Association (TIPLA). Currently, he serves as President-Elect of TIPLA.  Dr. Saravitz has provided pro bono legal services for the Low Income Taxpayer Program of Legal Aid of North Carolina and for Election Protection, the nation's largest non-partisan voter protection coalition.
